Debunking Super Blue Blood Total Lunar Eclipse Hysteria

How many phenomena can be hung on Earth's little satellite at once? It's sort of like overloading a pizza with too many ingredients -- the results can come out half baked.  Let's review what is getting piled on, and see if we can make some astrological (versus astronomical and mythological) sense of it.

On Wednesday, Jan 31 at about 5:27 am Pacific time the Aquarius Sun and Leo Moon will both be at 11 degrees 37 minutes of their respective signs. This is what makes for the astrological Full Moon -- both Sun and Moon are at the same degree of opposite signs.

Full Moon in Leo

Astrologically, with this Full Moon is in Leo, there is likely an increase in drama queen behavior. This is a Moon that needs to be at, or to hold, the center of attention, even if briefly, in order to feel emotionally secure, no matter what the stage.

If there is no natural forum for the spotlight, Leo Moon will create one through use of various types of self-expression. This can show up as extroverted life-of-the-party enthusiasm, insistence on being heard and seen, or on revelations made in a way that increases their shock value.

The Romantic Man-Made Idea of a Blue Moon

Blue Moon, you saw me standing alone

Without a dream in my heart, without a love of my own.

So goes the 4th version of the famous song written by Rodgers and Hart, and sung by such greats as Ella Fitzgerald, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, Chris Isaak, and Rod Stewart.

A Full Moon is popularly considered "Blue" when it occurs within the same calendar month as the previous Full Moon. Note, though, that these Full Moons are not in the same astrological sign. Basically, it's a trick of the math that created some months with 30 days, others with 31, and February either 28 or 29 – a totally man-made fiction.

And this calendar month explanation is said to be a misinterpretation of the concept. Originally, it was said that a Blue Moon is the 3rd of 4 Full Moons in one season. This definition didn’t get a song, but it is the understanding found in the farmer’s almanacs of the 19th and 20th centuries. It’s origins date back to the Romans.

A Blue Moon is not really rare, just infrequent. They happen a predictable 7 times in each 19 year cycle. According to the seasonal definition, the next Blue Moon will occur on May 18, 2019. But the next calendar Blue Moon occurs this March. There will be no Full Moon at all in February 2018.

Moon in Perigee, AKA Super Moon

Astronomically, the Moon is called a super Moon when it is in perigee -- that means, when it is at the point in its orbit that it is closest to the Earth. This proximity makes the Moon appear bigger and brighter in the sky.  A perigeal Moon's effect increases the pull of gravity on the Earth and makes for higher high tides. It is not a rare event, as it happens 3-4 times every year.

Some say that this causes geophysical stress on the Earth, with the implication that it can trigger pre or post Full Moon natural disasters, such as earthquakes, although this outcome has yet to be confirmed with scientific certainty.  Coastal erosion and flooding however, is an assured event, made the more traumatic due to humans insisting on disregarding the natural destructive force of extra high tides and building too close to the shoreline.

Others extrapolate the increased geophysical stress to mean that humans can or may feel extra stress or "lunacy" during the perigee.  Many empaths might swear to the veracity of this.

And just as many non-empaths may experience nothing out of the ordinary. This is because although the increased perigeal effect can be measured, it is a relatively small mathematical difference.  The biggest difference is psychological.

Total Lunar Eclipse Makes Moon Briefly Appear Red

The so-called Blood Moon is an atmospheric characteristic occurring during a lunar eclipse when sunlight is refracted through the Earth’s shadow. It’s the same type of refracted light that makes sunrise and sunset so colorful. By itself it has no astrological significance. It is the eclipse but not the red color that has bearing on the astrological energies.

However, blood Moons have figured into the prophetic mythologies of some religions and have been used to forecast evil as well as the contradictory second coming. Given that evil always abounds and no second coming has occurred, you can take those prophecies for the fear mongering and illusion that they more accurately are.

Astrologically, though, a Full Moon eclipse can be significant. I see them mostly as triggers for important changes in the following months. The changes may be difficult, or fearful, but they are always meant to provide you with the way forward on your soul’s path.

An eclipse is said to shine a bright light into our shadow self. That is, who we are at our core will be surfaced and illuminated. We might not like what we see but whatever it is will be “up” for us to finally deal with, heal, resolve, or accept.

In Leo, this eclipse may well bring up the things we have longed to say, but have suppressed out of the desire to be viewed as “nice”, to keep the peace, or not risk rejection. Something within us needs to be more fully and honestly

expressed, whether that’s a thought, an attitude or belief, or a creative aspect of the self that we haven’t let others know about.
